Question Answer Swing Trader Market Action update for 4/16, pklease. I swear I did that yesterday. I just copied and pasted from my word document. Swing Trader Market Action update for 4/16, pklease. Just pinged Justin. Good Morning IBD Live Good morning Tom. RBRK — Any interest? Like the fact that Contrafund owns it. Like the top-line growth too. Rising fund ownership. Seems to have a lot going for it. LLY ready to market its weight loss pill vs. injectibles. LLY up 12% premarket. Also interesting given earlier this week news of Pfizer stopping development of its own anti obesity pill because of liver injury to one patient. Technicals still rough for LLY, will be interesting to see were it closes today. Markets will be closed for GOOD Friday. Yep! We will miss everyone, but see you Monday! Hi folks, when is Webby returning? Monday Would love to hear your feedback on META, thanks! Like most other Mag 7 stocks, seems like it could be dead money for a while after recent sell-off. Growth definitely slowing at META Asking the panel’s position traders to offer an opinion: When is buying the dip just accumulating dead money? i.e. buying NVDA might take a year to earn a decent return. Meanwhile profits can be made short-term on stocks IBD Live is reviewing.
Thoughts on avoiding usual choices like the Mag 7? Exactly, we aren’t dip buyers who jump in blindly and hold only on fundamental beliefs while price goes down. Using price action, moving averages, relative strength, buy/sell rules and risk management strategies all provide a huge edge — improving
odds that you aren’t just “stuck” in a losing trade for months! How do yo like PLTR at this point? I tried it as it got back above the 50-day and hit 98.17 but I got shaken out yesterday. Yesteday was a big setback Yes but interesting to see buyers lift the Nasdaq off lows during final 30 minutes of trading. GM Ali. Is there a SMT long version today since the market is closed tomorrow? We will go a little longer, talking about weekly action and notable sectors, but we won’t have Webby’s charts this week. Back to a regular schedule next week! Any interest in PLTR We’ve been whipped around in this name in recent days! Tough stock to own when market is choppy. What source is Ed using for his market update this morning? He curates news from a number of sources Why continue to say “in spirit “… You say you have definite rules to follow so based on that – It is or is not a follow through day so why keep saying “in spirit “? Some advanced traders who have done a lot of research do not weigh volume as heavily, or use it at all, in their analysis (like Mike Webster). But because we have respect for the orthodox IBD rules, it would not make sense to exclude the volume
component for an official follow-through day. BUT it also doesn’t make sense to competely ignore a short-term, tactical level for traders that have the price component and the “look” of a potential change in trend. Trading doesn’t have
to be, and shouldn’t be, all or nothing. Not everything is black and white. A lot of gray area and nuance. It comes down to managing risk and making incremental decisions. Unless you WANT to wait for the official follow-through day signal
which includes the volume component, and do nothing in the meantime. That’s totally fine too. I’m sure you discussed the volume on the FT day in spirit being lower. Was this in consideration of several very high volume days? The lack of volume is exactly what made it a FTD in spirit vs. a FTD Hey JUSTIN, I couldn’t send you the wrestling story forn your son because I lost your email. Can you resend please? [email protected] Could you speak to sizing on the leaderboard short since it is an option trade vs a short etf Not an option trade Brent, sold short at 217.55. Hope to cover at a much lower price. Half position @ -5% weighting Rachel which stocks do you like longer term from a fundamental basis? Thx LRN and ATGE both look strong in my opinion. Solid EPS growth in recent quarters. SFM is another one that looks strong. Pltr…not a surprise to see a 8% move. Suprised leaderboard did not go another day o It was down sharply from our entry and we found ourselves “hoping” it would find support. Tough call. I’m new on here. Finally bought Market Surge. Nice! thanks for that Arnie that day was typical of what you see in bear markets – massive one day wonders that just get sold into Best days almost always surrounded by the worst. ADMA While it broke above a trend line on 4/14, is it “potentially” setting up for a second entry as it works on its second “inside day” in a row? Really like the way it’s trading here, Peter. tICKER ATGE please live answered Also—reiterate considering Under 200 day too—FTD failures Indeed. Even if we get a “real” follow-through day… May not work! That’s why we plan on going in incrementally, and let the market prove itself to us. An undercut would be an ominous sign but not unexpected, like you said, because of what
history tells us. can someone take a look at EAT? Thanks very close to breaking out of a downtrend. I have an alert set at 155. Their prized asset, Chili’s, has had several menu items go viral on TikTok in recent months. MRX massive down vol. today; MRX holding 21 dma MRX priced a secondary offering at 35.50. Good sign that stock is currently trading around 37.50. Powell does not want to do anything that makes Trump look good. Not sure if that’s his biggest concern. I think the bigger concern is Powell doesn’t want to do something that makes himself look bad. If he makes a move now and it precedes a 70s type stagflation, everyone will think it’s obvious and that
he’s an idiot. No one wants to go down in history as an idiot. Ken Thanks GM David Scott, thank you so much for mentioning Tom Hougaard’s book, Best Lower Wins: Why Normal Thinking Never Wins the Trading Game. Super easy read and very good on mindset. Strong recommendation! Thanks Tim, I keep that one in my gym bag and read it in the sauna. I need the reinforcement! 🙂 Uber Watching closely as it tries to break out of downtrend. Recent guess Matt Caruso brought UBER up last time he was on… Typo in prior comment: Scott, thank you so much for mentioning Tom Hougaard’s book, Best Loser Wins: Why Normal Thinking Never Wins the Trading Game. Super easy read and very good on mindset. Strong recommendation! Tim, I have not heard of that book, sounds like a great one by Scott St Clair, nice. Great advice from the panel on not overtrading in this market. It seems like those who buy at the end of the day or at the end of the week can’t trust the markets to tank their stocks. Day trades or swing trades might work, but one needs to
watch the market closely and who has time (or Scott’s stock picking prowess) to do that? 🙂 Are we limited to short selling or options at this point? Well said. High volatility makes all trading much more challenging. Things will settle down; the trick is to figure out when and see better patterns emerge. Dan Fitz was touting this last week ATGE live answered Ali, great answer on the nuance of trading, you should save for all the poeple that constantly are complaining that its not exactly how its supposed to be. Some things only come with time and experience. Hey Phil, thanks for the feedback! Appreciate it. ATGE, the daily vol seems low live answered Justin—that RS divergent on UNH supports your opinion live answered ATGE It does have a wide spread (between Bid/Ask). live answered “IWM — a “fat pennant”? (or may a “fat wedgy pennant”) 🤔🫣😂” Wow, look at the continued resistance at the 21-day EMA for IWM, eh Larry? UTI as well live answered I think UTI is another educational stock that is worth looking at Agree. 98 Composite. Pretty liquid, $23 mil per day. IDR Sharpe ey, glad Rachel is highlighting it now. Good Morning HatMan. Hope the Weekend pause will bring some positives for next week. When will the US and all key nations get tired of squabbling on tariffs, David? We shall have to see, eh? what was the India etf? please! INDA is one you could check out. thoughts on NFLX? live answered Arnie, we are moving production from China to India. Darrell Good point, this trend could accelerate further, right Darrell? SFM also good in that it seems relatively tariff-immune. I look at the weekly chart and wonder if the big money has already made in SFM. Seems late stage to me. We’ll see. so, rather than say “in spirit ” why not clarify your comments saying “it has most of the elements except “volume” or what else it is missing? One other thing, rising price in very high volume indicates institutional buying so why not recognize
it as such ? We most definitely have explained on numerous occasions that the lack of volume is the reason why it is considered “in spirit” vs. official! And many of us on the team do look at rising volume as a signal of institutional buying and say as
much on the show. We also look at institutional sponsorship, accumulation/distribution, and up/down volume. Can we please take a look of INDA – Indian market.. few tickers MMYT Busting a downtrend, short-term technical action positive. Of course, potential resistance at the 200-day MA looms. Check out EPI too? Good morning, with such market volatility, which MS screens are favored? Might consider using ATR (21-day MA of 3 or lower, or 5 or lower for experienced traders) and Beta (use 1.10 or lower, for instance) in your screens? Ackman just ran in the shorts on HTZ Bill Ackman loves to battle with other funds, doesn’t he, Hassan? Cheers to you and the Cavs! Hello everyone Happy Easter Weekend Shohreh Ali you are in the long term position trader space. You own it and wear it well. Continue to assert your perspectives whenever possible. Swing trading is not for me. I appreciate your longer term perspectives in the IBD mix. Thanks Robert! Made some tiny nibbles/test buys recently but the waters aren’t safe right now so I backed away. Trending markets are where I feel comfortable really pressing the gas, and we’re not seeing that just yet. But a good number of
quality, A+ stocks on my watchlist so I am prepared for when the market gives us a signal that we’ve seen some material improvement. Even then, I will be incremental and want to see more proof before deploying more capital. NFLX double bottom too. Earnings! Focal point after hours! https://www.investors.com/research/earnings-calendar-analyst-estimates-stocks-to-watch/ Ed, how did you set that alert on the drawn line? Hi Paul, real easy, right click on it in MS, a pop up window shows. KRMN is acting so well. Agree. Happy Easter Weekend Gregg! For your reading pleasure — https://www.investors.com/news/management/leaders-and-success/bobby-jones-golfer-marketing-literary-genius-masters-golf/ Rachel what does a shake out pplus 3 mena? Bookmark our FAQ page at investors.com/LiveFAQ for a ton of helpful links/explainer articles about concepts/patterns, like this one: https://www.investors.com/how-to-invest/investors-corner/chart-reading-202-why-the-shakeout-3-pattern-makes-money/ SPOT will move on tonight’s NFLX print It very well could! Ali I just joined, what stocks did they say they want to cover BSX, SPOT, BUD, SFM Is now a good time to play SQQQ? The market is so volatile that I’ve only been doing day trades on the market. CRPT: Thoughts on this name? Weekly and daily blue dots; fundamentals look solid; new RS hight, etc., etc…. Is that the right ticker? CRPT is below its 50 and 200-day lines. Ali, you still holding NFLX? I exited yesterday. I needed the stock to follow up on Tuesday’s powerful move to feel comfortable holding, especially in these market conditions. Without any sort of cushion, it’s more of a gamble. I could be missing out on a strong breakout,
but I could also be avoiding a negative reaction. I’ll potentially get back in on Monday IF things are looking good in reaction to the report. We’ll have to see how it acts. Will discuss on Monday’s show no doubt! GM, Ali. Still in PLTR? Patience yesterday would have helped with close right at 50 sma. Thank you! That’s the thing, I usually AM patient and wait for the close of the day or even the week to make a decision but that’s when we’re in a trending market. Right now we’re in a volatile market, so I was quicker to get out when we got the undercut
of the prior lows just to manage risk. I got shaken out of my small position, but maybe it’ll form some sort of handle here. Ideally, it can tighten up, market can give us a follow-through day as this one breaks out above 100. That would
make me feel more confident! But we’ll see… Could you explain why SPOT will move with NFLX earnings reaction. Are they seen as the same customer base? I feel like they’ve moved in sympathy before and that’s when/why we’ve made that connection. They also are both subscription/entertainment businesses. Doesn’t mean they WILL move together… but they could! could Crwd be forming a handle on the DB? yes. Might be. Would you prefer a double bottom to have a rising 50 day line? (popped out at me on RBRK) That’s why SPOT and NFLX look a lot better. Also RBRK’s ATR is almost 8%. Can you explain how Justin calculated the 9% range for Netflix or provide me a link with the information Thanks. Check out this video! https://www.investors.com/ibd-videos/videos/portfolio-management-tactics-for-earnings-season-determining-whether-to-hold-or-sell-before-a-quarterly-report PEN I covered it on Tuesday. Looks good. Wish it had better sales growth though. justin when you are in cash are you including 401K I have been lately. In my 401k, I have 10% that’s pretty much always invested and the rest I trade. Right now that 90% trading amount is mostly in cash. Justin, you can buy stocks in your 401K? Not to speak for Justin, but at Fidelity, I am able to do so with our 401k PLTR notice the lack of volume at resistance Good observation. Even with the good close Tuesday there was no spike in volume. Ali, Love the fact that you are handling most of the Q&A today. It’s ike a personal Ali teaching session. Thanks….. So nice of you to say! Love weighing in when I can. Glad to hear it’s helpful. It’s awesome that our team is able to share our own trading experiences and share different points of view. I think that’s what makes us unique, other financial
journalists don’t or aren’t able to actively trade so we are really able to step into investors’ shoes with real experiences and learnings (sometimes from mistakes!). I’ll need to hop off soon, I’m doing my weekly hit with SiriusXM Business
Radio on ch. 132 at 10:30 a.m. ET… AAII – bearish sentiment only down 2% week to week in yesterday’s Survey Report Must be broken, its breaking records every week and market does not seem to care LOL Unless some positive news item comes out. It is likely we get another down on SPY…it’s just a matter of time. Q’s are hanging by a thread. Personally, I wouldn’t mind another leg down. Ali, agree with Duncan, thank you! Always find your Q&A answers super helpful. Many thanks — Cheers, Claire! Have you all reviewed MRX today already? I’ll get to it soon! I’ve tried playing MELI several times now, each time getting stopped out. And just re-looking at the weekly you’ve covered just now, I see something I didn’t realize before. Since the trend turned positive starting in July, 2022, there were
FOUR occurances of it breaking below its 40-week line, and each time would have been the PERFECT time to buy. A pity that’s not our strategy here. But in general, if you’re not buying the dips in MELI, you’re very likely going to get stopped
out every time. Conclusion: Don’t buy this name when its chart looks good. Buy when it looks terrible! Good observation. Hi @Chris/Ali, What is your take on PM? Extended now but keep an eye out from a second pullback. If the market turns higher, this one will probably stall. how to I get the ATR to show on the chart? We don’t have that yet, just available in the lists as a column you can add. But something we’re working on. Can you get alerts texted ? No, not for MS, but download the App for alert notifications Trying to learn to use expected move using options. Justin, are you using the at the money strikes for April 25 weeklies or May 2? I calculate around 9% move using at the money April 25 weeklies Yes. I did use April 25 weeklies when I did the calculation. LOAR Earnings growth looks amazing. Building a handle?? Seems to be. We have it on the Leaderboard Watch. Like the accumulation in recent weeks. Good to see as right side builds. Thoughts on DRS…thanks! Have a great Easter Weekend IBD Live team!!!! Yet another strong performer in the aerospace and defense group. 35 seems like legit pivot and still in range but easy to get chopped up in this market! justin when you are in cash are you including 401K Lately, I’ve been including that. With my 401K, I have 10% that stays invested and I trade the rest which right now means it’s majority in cash. MRX? live answered MRX, was there news? priced secondary Scott, just wondering if you executed or canceled your order in Fidelity Contra on Monday 4/7? LOL no, it is tiny in comparision to my overall accounts. I trade individal stocks in my 401K but for some reason there is some type of rule where you cannot do that for 100% of the account so I am in funds for like 5 or 10% of it. Scott, are you shorting NVO? No, I am short big liquid (NVO does qualify but I missed that one) TSLA NVDA shorts as of this moment DUST Gold short looks good I am short GLD climax top IMHO why Justin sold his PLTR ? It’s on uptrend positive side. Probably used Monday’s low as the stop. Scott, why would someone ask about selling your COntra fund? I mentioned on monday that I was going to buy a pilot position. in my 401k portion that I cannot trade stocks. I fully expect to keep buying all the way down in the bear market LOL. It is a very tiny position. I prefer to be in ind. stocks Scott, gold miners new highs peaked yesterday . https://stockcharts.com/h-sc/ui?s=%24GDXHLP&p=D&yr=0&mn=2&dy=0&id=p77042264889 thanks Is the market in the second leg down already or the first? Second leg. If we take out the 4/7 low we’d be starting the third leg down. Tim and Scott – Thanks for the Tom Hougaard book recommendation. Just ordered it on Amazon. May I also suggest ‘The Psychology of Money: Lessons on Wealth, Greed, and Happiness’ by Morgan Housel. I believe Hatman also gave this book a thumbs
up. Thanks, yes I read that as well. Tom book more “trader” oriented but both are good Thanks Scott, I thought it might have something to do with the added managers on the fund. I don’t the see the issue there, as Danoff still managing 90% I am sure whoever eventually takes over will be a Danoff “clone” Scott, Jason Shapiro says positioning still not crowded in GLD and going down as price going up. interesting, I am never certain of course, but technically has exhaustive characteristics that I follow (DeMark for example) Does NVDA look like it is heading back to the lows a week and a half ago? when I look at a monthly chart of NVDA my hair stands up LOL. Underperformer going forward most likely. Market Rallies, it will rally but not as much would be my guess. Arnie…show us your poker face when you get a shake out? 🙂 ahhhahahahha I reviewed the death cross charts of SPX using the aforementioned table to 1982 (from QuantifiableEdges). 1988 and 1990 charts are close to the volatility we are experiencing with a 13% and 9% drawdown from the date of the death cross. This
is consistent with the average draw down of 13%. If we sell off for a third leg down it will be a test of the most recent lows. The market then meandered for a few quarters. That may be the character of this market. Of course all analysis
is subject to change, but this rhymes. Keep an open mind as we wait for a follow thru day. Further analysis would include FTD and time of top performing stocks breakouts for these years off the bottom. Weekend homework. Better to do research in this market than buying. Sorry – when? 830AM PST Market surge academy. Why not recorded? I ca’nt watch live…. sorry, it is the only one we do live, we do 50 others recorded on our home page each year. Is the margetsurge webinar on saturday? Yes
