Thanks for your contributions to my trading skills. Thank you Leslie…I’m having a lot of fun with those Joyful Friday to all! Hey Ron! could you address Marketsurge outage? We had an outage impacting the home page of investors.com for a few hours yesterday. Bookmark marketsurge.investors.com to access from a different entry point just in case that ever happens again, though we have mitigation steps enacted to
prevent. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience Good morning Kathy!!! Hi Brian! “Great to see Kathy again, it’s been too long. Where oh where is our Ali Rally!” Thank you and yes! GM everyone! GM Jorge!! Good Morning everyone! Love the hat, Man! GM Richard, thank you! I need to get a new Masters hat too!! Happy St. Pats Day – IBD Live = May the Green Trading begin live answered Good morning. Webby, thanks for the link yesterday to your recent video on follow-through days. I enjoyed your introduction and stories about Bill O’Neil. Thank you Dann! Good morning Kathy, you’re a legend around here Thank you:) Good Morning! So nice to have Kathy back on today. Can someone look at ATRO? Thanks Hey Patrick! 100%. Yes, one to keep watching!! Noted in Thursday’s SMT (Stock Market Today) article https://www.investors.com/market-trend/stock-market-today/dow-jones-nasdaq-intel-meta-platforms-astronics/ Good morning IBDLive! Welcome back Kathy. Thank you! Kathy APP thanks been a great leader… needs a new base… would like to see it hold 40wma Morning Kathy! Which companies are you most excited about long term that you plan to hold for years? Thx GM! Besides NVDA, I am long DUOL, and thinking it may have potential as a learning platform GM to all, Hatman’s zoom settings are much better, just my 2 cents, thanks GM Jain, I always use 125% to 150% zoom, then zoom out when we need a longer chart view. ALI – Will you please ask Kathy to evaluate CAVA’s current base? Thanks in advance. I would of liked to see CAVA hold the 40wma which it did not. therefore, i think it may be a while before a new base or setup occurs. good morning! GM Lei! GM AND HAPPY FRIDAY IBD LIVE CREW! Happy FriYay Mauro!! This morning’s SMT column opens with futures higher because of “the LIKELIHOOD of an averted shutdown”, but the sense I got from Senatorial interviews of minority members in newscasts last night, is that there is deeply-felt, substantial kickback to Senator Schumer’s recommendations amongst the ranks. So I’d expect to see some real volatility here if there’s overlap with procedures and debates ongoing in the chamber during the day. There is also serious potential here for a really big gap in either direction come Monday. Sounds like a bigger Congressional fight headed down the pike, Ira? Mike, it’s time for a new IBD headshot, looking good! Thank you so much Adam…I’m really focused on my health these days Good morning everyone GM Nicholas, thanks for joining us. Webby, I have been always wanted to ask you that for your personal account, are you more of a long term or swing? 51.50% swing and the balance is longer term position trading I’m surprised you’re saying the rally attempt is still alive. Yesterday the NASDQ and SPY both closed well below the low from the prior day. Please walk through that with us. The Nasdaq composite did not close below the prior low. The QQQs did. Day 3 I’ve never been so happy to have counted incorrectly…not kidding. I didn’t want an FTD today Webby – GM – this a turn or bull trap? Thanks for the videos on your new channel! Way too early to tell…logical area to bounce up for a bit…won’t know until next week if this is more than a little bounce PLTR GEV looking strong GE also good for Watchlist. YUMC is BO Good one to watch indeed; do younger people in China enjoy the savings of American fast food these days? I wonder. Let’s keep an eye on the sales trends, a good indicator of popularity of American brands, eh? Cheers, Hatman You can buy a stock 2 or 3 times before it finally moves up. Generally this occurs within a 30 day time period. Since this is a washsale in a breokerage account how do you handle these type of tranactions. Thank you, Michael Levinson I don’t care about wash sales. If I get shaken out of stock and take a 3%-5% loss, who cares if you can’t write that off if the stock rallies 100%. Ali Saves the Day!! live answered Can you pls explain pink rally day? A day where the Nasdaq or S&P close in the upper half of the range but are still down for the day. Mike, you are hilarious! 🙂 Are you happy by Iron Butterfly…this is for Webby live answered Why don’t market charts show the closing range? Seems to be a bug. We’ve brought it to the attention of the product team. Webbie next time in NYC see The Outsiders! You will love the music and the story! Cool…thanks. My better half has family in The Bronx…so when we visit I’ll check it out we have about 900+ points on the NASDAQ to move before we hit that 21 day… wow Let’s not get too excited if we get one good day! Where are you parking cash? Check out BIL PLTR, Ali Still holding! Seems rather dicey to me that the model allows for Days 2 or 3 to close below the rally day. What a weak setup for the follow-through day. Have you any specs on the likelihood of follow-through failure coming out of such a weak setup? Yes. Jan. 6 2023 on the Naz Take a look at SPOT. Last few days have been good. MA are loking better. Not many growth stocks are above their 50-day lines at this point. Could see it back on Leaderboard at some point, along with DASH Thoughts on Dash? Thx Recently sold during the pullback, on my watchlist for a new base and to see how it’s looking on a potential FTD Chris, AVGO from a day trade perspective I’d watch for a reversal on the 5 min chart. Pulling back now. Webby, this looks like the first wave down. I can’t see moving on anything until the inverse ETFs dry up. Sure, we could move to the 200 day, but then the shorts will hammer down more until 25% off high. I always keep an open mind…but yes a bounce up to the 200 would be normal and failing there would be VERY normal Is there a number (level) for the mean reversion? 50% of this move? 🤔 I use 25%, 33% and 50%…but many like to use Fibs for retracements and mean reversion trades OKTA. If you owned it, would you add in this market or just be content with the gain on your original position? Acting very well, showing a lot of strength and support. We increased FXI today on LB. If I owned OKTA and it was a small position, I would consider making it a little bigger today. Is there a link to view past IBD Live shows? For example, Mark Richie’s March 7, 2025 show? Thank you Go to IBD Live home page and you can scroll back to that date. It will take a while.: https://research.investors.com/ibdlive/ Mike, TQQQ? only for focus who’d want to day trade…too early to tell if this is for real IMHO Kathy Donnelly, Queen of the Hold lol. thanks Kathy: what do you think about PLTR? i’m holding it from the first stage base. 🙂 “Kathy, Great to see you on IBD Live today. When you hold a position like Rubrik or CAVA or DUOL, Do you just hold it or Hedge it? Thanks” thanks. i have tried hedging, and right now I still prefer to do it as i explained. holding the first stage base buy and selling adds as needed. “Hi Kathy, are u a long term holder of apple? what is the rule how much would you sell when it broke 200 day ? Thank you” Hi. i don’t have apple. if i knew now what i knew then, i’d probably still have it from 2009. lol. a learning process Kathy, what are your thoughts on RDDT? Hi. I currently have a position and looking for it to hold the 40wma ? for Kathy, How do you apply the Lifecycle Trade to companies that are about to split in to several companies, like HON, which is going to go thru a split. The split of GE was very lucrative for the investors. Do you apply any rules to spinoffs or not? Thank you. i do try to apply the rules to spin offs. my feeling is that it works pretty well. Webby – have you read ‘Brothers’ by Alex VH yet? If not, outstanding book for any VH or rock fan. Yes, I was very disappointed on how Alex treated Sammy, Mikey and Gary in the book…wasn’t cool. But the rest was great For DUOL at what price would the 10 bagger calculation begin; the current price or some earlier price? From her entry point Kathy, what criteria do you use to find your stocks? Hi. I use $20M liquidity minimum. strong revenue. recent ipos y mature stocks. higher fundamentals put it to the top of the list.. Kathy – If capital tax laws weren’t what they are, would you still hold so long? (Or would you trade around a position on the way up.) Hi. it’s never been about capital tax laws. i prefer to sit and live my life then trade all the time. think darvas and how i made $2M in the stock market Kathy, do you think Portillos (PTLO) has potential? hi. it recently popped up on my screen again. looking for a more tight constructive base. last one was too wide and loose imo So Kathy – Duolingo as a potential big winner. Any others you like long run? Thx! hi… idk… maybe rddt.. the data play is interesting… “Hi Kathy, Have you traded GEV? Thanks” hi. i did. i didn’t get the first stage base, so sold. like that it is holding the 40wma Whoa…! Major SPY hit UMICH numbers were TERRIBLE Honey, go get the gold! The world is coming to an end. We need to be ready to move :). Hilarious. Thanks for the book recommendation. One of my all-time favorites. Mine too! Marty Schwartz, Pit Bull for anyone who didn’t catch it Would love to hear Kathy and Ali’s perspective on DASH this is kathy. i think it is holding up well… needs a new base imo I always find it interesting, and annoying, that usually at 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, the market will spike up or down as “the machines” try to manipulate the market “at the top of the hour”. Still whippy, yes. For Cathy https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-03-13/apple-plans-ios-19-feature-that-lets-airpods-live-translate-conversations This could change the long term outlook for the stock thanks for sending.. interesting.. i wouldn’t be against buying apple again if builds a new base… Kathy, do you offer any classes on life cycle trade? hi. we did a partnership with Trader Lion called the IPO Masterclass. I also offer investing coaching, but not taking new clients right now. Mike, Unclear: You initially said Tuesday wasn’t a “pink rally day” since NASDAQ closed in lower half. Thursday undercut Wednesday (a potential day 1), but hasn’t undercut Tuesday. The ultimate low of a rally if it’s not a rally day (up day or close in upper half of down day) is considered day 0 of rally. Thoughts on MCHI? 🙂 So, today isn’t Day 3, correct? Today IS day 3 on the Nasdaq. Kathy – Thanks for answering my question about CAVA. Still waiting for one to open in No. CA. Will be informative to see how chart pattern responds to its Aug. 9th low. The Lifecycle Trade is one of the Top 10 books on my bookshelf. Bravo
to you and your co-authors! thank you so much! and agree with cava… we’ll see… Ed – was reported a month ago that the fwd inflation expectations was heavily influenced by political party representation Dems very negative and Republicans very positive — very political. So that might be a relative wash. I don’t know how independents did, but I assume that’s not looking good. I like your cat Ed ! Thanks. I do too! isn’t there a fed meeting next week? Yes. Fed isn’t going to do anything, but may give hints about that’s its open to stuff. Powell will of course on the surface be wait and see, but might give some indications of a cut in May or June. The economy is obviously shifting rapidly — and could shift again – so hard to gauge what the Fed will want to do in May/June. Is SOUN an example of what Kathy was saying regarding a stock holding the 40 week? hi. this is kathy. yes, however, i would caveat with that is a volatile stock especially since lower in price – under $20 So we have Catman and Hatman now lol i thinnk capitulation sentiment 🙂 I’m with you on DUOL, Kathy. Of course as a fellow user on Day 156 of a streak, I’m hopelessly addicted and biased now. And yes, there is the potential of a 10-bagger here IF it diversifies in the way that Amazon did. AMZN started with books only and branched out. DUOL started with languages (and what a tough proving-ground that specialization has been). Now it’s branching out into music and math. It’s already deeply into using AI, has accumulated massive data sets, and is
incredibly scaleable using its current models, working assets, and growing capitalization. We shall see. we shall see. thanks for sharing Is there any way to see what companies are in an IBD industry sector without MarketSurge? Yes, check out our stock checkup tool and our IBD data tables site section! Chris, check out XERS Looks promising. It’s a much smaller company with dollar volume of only $9 million, so it hasn’t hit my screens. But I will check it out. Thank you. I know I don’t get a vote, and I know that any change to the industry groups can introduce discomfort, but I really love the idea of breaking the Biotechs into subgroups as mentioned by Chris. Love it! Are there any other Industry Group changes
being considered, and with what kind of lead time? We’re looking at a lot of industry group changes. Not sure the timing of that. what are Kathy’s thoughts re CRDO? hi.i think it is volatile and it needs a new base Cathy, is there a summary of your rules somewhere. Have they changed from your book? Really enjoy your contributions, fellow Texan. Thank you. hello fellow texan. not officially. i shared a lot on the ipo masterclass with trader lion, but can probably find a lot of it on ibd podcasts and other ibd lives. It would be very helpful for Kathy to elaborate on her rules and, specifically, how she differentiates recency bias and changing market environments from proven, higher-odds, sustainable rules. Thanks! Just walked through! Mike, if there is a follow through day on Monday, from 5% invested what percentage will you go up to on that 1st day? Good question…100% depends on what is available to buy in position. For a normal FTD I tend to get to 25% to 30% invested…but I’ve gone much higher and much lower Kathy, what is the current week MCP? on nvda? watch the replay for current mcp on nvda… i think it was around 70 Kathy is a poster child for the saying, “the big money is made in the sitting” that’s always been my favorite quote OMG this is so complicated She uses a simple formula for retaining her gains to sit for a potentially even bigger move Kathy do you hedge your NVDA positions to offset some of the draw downs? She prefers trimming down to core vs. hedging (like me!) KD, have you run a model to compare managing a NVDA sell when it tops and wait to buy back after the drop reversal? i have not. i think it requires being able to back up the truck on the buy back and that’s not my style – otherwise it could work i would assume Even though yesterdays low didn’t undercut tuesday low on the Naz… On all the other indexes it did… Doesn’t that carry any weight? I’m not sure why today is 3rd day of new uptrend and not a possible first… You can get divergences in the FTD counts for the indexes Cathy.- Will you still trim your position if you see that it is consolidating longer? hi. my current strategy is not to trim the first stage base buys. only 2nd and third as needed. Chris, Thanks, how would you define reversal on the 5 minute chart? Would you buy when clearing the prior candle, or wait until the high of a recent candle ie 194.75 or 195.5? I typically look for a close above the high of the reversal bar. AVGO has gotten more volatile in past 30 minutes. So I wouldn’t be trying to catch the reversal on this one. What was the news event from Ed that Webby said was a big deal, please. UMich consumer sentiment index. Consumer sentiment fell sharply — big, big drop in the expectations component. Perhaps even worse, inflation expectations for 1-year and 5-10 years jumped. The Fed pays attention to inflation expectations. Can Kathy please give us her view on HOOD? hi. i have hood from first stage base. looking for it to hold the 40wma and create a new base at some point Webby, did the 70% cap gain rate have anything to do with the long term hold? Yes and no…that’s a big topic Webby, Have a segment for break-out days that fail to compare the charts of successful ones so we are prepared. Good idea Berney WAY – for Kathy, please! Thanks for being here! thanks! i don’t own it. needs a new base before i would consider it Emotionally, how do you handle potentially losing a large % or your gains (albeit a large number)? In cold hard cash, that has to hurt a little—as it is a big number is still a big number. Do you hedge your gains at all? And, do your selection
criteria track IBD’s? It is great to be able to devise rules to manage huge gainers, but first you have to have them. my primitive brain hurts yes, but my pre-frontal conrtex brain knows i’ll still retain gains and make money and it’s worth it to me. i don’t hedge at this time. the implied volatility involved with hedges doesn’t appeal to me. i’ve tried it
and may try again, but right now i prefer my current strategy Ed my daughter loves your cat Ahh. Abed is a sweetie. 17 years old now. Nicely done Kathy! Reading The Lifecycle Trade now too. Great work! thank you:) kathy a seminar wow 🙂 Would love Kathy’s take on SNDK, knowing it’s an old new IPO hi emilio! i saw that! I added it to my list. it looks good. if the market was better would probably try it. what is your earnings marker / limit for your stock search Chris? My main screen is 90 Comp 90 RS with at least double-digit sales growth and $20 million in dollar volume. remind us what the blue dot means? RS line at new high when stock building base or breaking out Thank you Kathy 🙂 Thanks, Ali. I was specifically asking about survivorship bias and how changing market conditions make it harder for rules to maintain high odds of success. I think her taking it to a longer-term view and using math helps her strategy not be influenced by changing market conditions. It’s all about the math and technical levels @kathy , any thoughts on Rubrik ? Thanks That was the first stock she discussed today! Would review the recording later for her thoughts. PLTR is 62% from 200 day line. That’s some painful math! 😉 If it can hold the lows and form a new base — maybe the 200-day line will catch up a bit over time. Kathy, when you make your initial buy, what % of your portfolio do you invest and do you do it in one buy? i try to start 10-12 and get to 16% as soon as i can. I like to do two buys in a good market… more than that if market is iffy because not mpuuting as much in as fast Ali, Chris why is the 40 week not called the 200 day? Thanks If you are on the weekly chart, it’s 40-week and if on daily it’s the 200-day Kathy how do you decide which IPO’s to invest in early? Palantir at 10 for example. live answered What does Kathy do to find her stocks so early? live answered Any thoughts on ALHC? resisting to go down, RS at new high and it is a high octane name Strong stock, but ALHC is the lone wolf in an overall weak group. Usually like to see broader leadership in a group. Hello Kathy! Looking at ATAT weekly, it’s positive that it supports the turbulence zone, don’t you think? i would agree… marekt holding it down probably Cathy I have read your book and have held my nvda since 2018 and it has changed my life. Thanks for all your comments and please be a regular on the show. Nice comment Tim, congrats on NVDA Coolest dudes, Willie Nelson then Warren Buffet. If Webby disagrees with this he’ll have to look over his shoulder. God bless Texas! 10000000% i ordered book Yep, weighed down by heavy-volume sell-off from Feb. 19 – Feb. 25. Can Kathy share her IPO screening peramiters for MS? shared live. ipos last four years that trade at least $20M/day CART… Kathy’s thoughts, please needs to build a base and get back over 40wma As an oilfield PE in Htown with some past years in Denver, I admire your career moves into the market with CANSLIM expertise. I really enjoyed you and co-authors IPO Lifecycle Trade Book. Thanks for being on the show sharing your thoughts.
Keep Chargin! live answered Does ERJ make their own engines? (Seems like a question for Ed :-D) Looks like both GE and RTX’s Pratt & Whitney make at least most of Embraer’s jet engines. not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but Kathy sounds just like Kellyanne Conway. Really? 🙂 I am not sure, ha ha ha!! kathy – IPO’s in your list – what’s the $20 million/day criteria….? it’s in Marketsurge. price of stock multiplied by daily average volume. i was that to be more than $20M/day Great session again! where to learn more about MCP, MCP 50? thank you The Lifecycle Trade book — Kathy is a co-author Do we have screen using marketvergefrom Kathy ? Her only criteria: dollar volume (liquidity) and anything coming public last 4-5 years Kathy, is VIK on your radar? I see it was not a special jewel… live answered aloha Kathy so glad you are here!! IBDMeetup #8? aloha! IBD Meetup Lesson 8. that’s the screen i created. i’ll have to find it. I have been on Viking 2 weeks before on the way to Stockholm Nice!! I love their catchphrase… for the thinking traveler! “Kathy You would like a Viking tour!” live answered I learn here, everyday with you all. Vacations are for Pina Coladas on the beach LOL LOL lol, Viking makes you learn as you drink! 2 for 1! how much does a stock like ONON depend on the strength of the overall market vs. acting strong on it’s own? It’s the market and the sector — look at DECK — as well as its own performance. With markets concerned about economic growth, discretionary spending could take a hit despite ONON’s strong (but lumpy!) performance. ERJ strong RS 100% great time awesome thanks Paul! Thank you everyone and Thank you Kathy for sharing your knowledge and insights. Great show. TY Payam!! what is Kathy’s size position strategy? Check out our podcast archives — she’s been on the podcast before. youtube.com/investorsbusinessdaily GE you could try live answered Hatman – you know I like TGTX and AGI – any names that you would add this morning??? Hi Jamie, AEM has a short, tight consolidation entry. I am watching ATRO, NVDA, AVGO very closely. Look for Shakeout + 5% entries too! Cheers It’s never a turbulence zone when Kathy D. is on.
