Enhanced Operational Tolling Systems : tolling system

North Carolina Turnpike Authority and Kapsch TrafficCom are initiating a landmark infrastructure project to implement the first fully operational tolling system utilizing Vehicle-to-Everything — also known as V2X — communication on a public roadway. This initiative represents a significant technological advancement.

The advanced, fully operational tolling system moves beyond the pilot phase to integrate two separate data streams — conventional roadside tolling infrastructure and direct, real-time communication from connected vehicles themselves. The core engineering challenge involves seamlessly merging these distinct technological systems.

The new system will not replace existing infrastructure. Rather, it is framed as an evolutionary enhancement that builds upon a longstanding partnership between the North Carolina Turnpike Authority and Kapsch TrafficCom. The deployment will be executed in phases, beginning with hardware installation and culminating in a system capable of invoicing drivers based on data transmitted directly by their vehicles.
