Dynamic Captioning Systems : Caption with Intention

FCB Chicago has pioneered a transformative approach to media accessibility through its ‘Caption with Intention’ system. The innovative framework was developed in collaboration with the Chicago Hearing Society and Rakish Entertainment.

The ‘Caption with Intention’ system reimagines traditional captioning by incorporating dynamic visual elements such as animated text, color variations, and customized typography to communicate not only spoken words but also emotional nuance, vocal inflection, and narrative pacing. The year-long development process involved extensive consultation with Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities, ensuring the system authentically addresses long-standing limitations in media accessibility while preserving artistic intent.

The project’s significance was formally recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with a Scientific and Technical Award. This signals potential industry-wide adoption as an open-source standard for inclusive content creation.
