Stadler has signed an agreement to supply ten FLIRT Akku battery-electric multiple units (BEMUs) to Danish operator Lokaltog, exercising an option under their October 2024 contract and expanding the fleet to 24 trains in total. The units will be assembled at Stadler’s Siedlce plant in Poland and are slated for service introduction in the first half of 2029. Each FLIRT Akku can travel up to 100 km on battery power alone and recharges its lithium-ion storage during operation on 25 kV catenary sections and through regenerative braking. By replacing Lokaltog’s IC2 diesel units, these trains are expected to significantly lower regional rail carbon emissions and support Denmark’s transition to sustainable transport.

The two-car FLIRT Akku trains feature lightweight aluminium car bodies with low-floor entry, wide automatic doors with gap-bridging steps, and dedicated spaces for up to two wheelchairs and ten bicycles. Passenger comfort is enhanced by air-conditioned interiors, onboard Wi-Fi, and real-time information displays, while water-cooled IGBT converters enable fast battery charging under overhead lines. In electrified mode, the trains reach speeds up to 160 km/h and operate at up to 120 km/h in battery mode, allowing seamless service across both electrified and non-electrified routes such as the Tølløsebanen and Østbanen lines. These capabilities align with Lokaltog’s goals for accessible, flexible, and zero-emission regional rail services in Region Zealand.
