Clemson FRESH has unveiled a groundbreaking Compostable Packaging Research and Design Center to accelerate the creation and testing of sustainable packaging materials. Backed by $690,000 in funding from Clemson University and the South Carolina Department of Commerce, the facility is expected to play a central role in shaping the future of eco-friendly packaging across the U.S.

The new center will support rapid innovation in compostable packaging, addressing emerging global regulations and increasing demand for sustainable solutions. Equipped with advanced tools such as in-vessel composters and reverse aeration bays, the facility can assess packaging breakdown in just 28 days — dramatically improving testing turnaround. It also adheres to ASTM standards and includes home compostability research capabilities, creating real-world applications for new packaging technologies.

As part of Clemson’s broader sustainable packaging ecosystem, this initiative aims to foster industry partnerships, attract federal research funding, and prepare a new generation of packaging professionals. It reinforces Clemson’s leadership in environmental innovation while supporting global efforts to reduce plastic waste and meet future regulatory requirements.
