Koufuku Holdings has responded to Japan’s agricultural labour shortages and recent rice deficits by deepening its involvement in primary production. In May 2025, President Takeshi Kitamono outlined a shift from purely purchasing rice from growers to operating the company’s own farm starting in 2026. This move is intended to stabilise supply chains, provide more direct support to farmers facing an ageing workforce, and ensure consistent product quality amid environmental challenges that have disrupted domestic production in recent years.

In parallel, Koufuku is applying biotechnological processes to minimise waste and extract additional value from rice milling by-products. The company’s initiatives include converting husks, bran and other residuals into functional food ingredients and bio-based materials, thereby reducing environmental impact while creating new product lines. These waste-reduction strategies form a central part of Koufuku’s sustainability agenda and support its broader plans for international expansion into Asian and European markets.
