Starbucks, in partnership with Huhtamaki, has initiated a trial of compostable cold drink cups at selected locations in California and Minnesota. The trial features cold cups manufactured from double-walled paperboard with a bioplastic liner, complemented by compostable molded fiber lids. This initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce reliance on conventional plastic packaging and address environmental impacts associated with single-use items. The design of the cups and lids is intended to meet performance requirements while complying with emerging regulatory and sustainability standards.

The collaboration leverages Huhtamaki’s expertise in the production of compostable molded fiber components, ensuring proper fit and functional integrity of the lids. Data collected from the pilot will be used to evaluate product performance, consumer feedback, and overall feasibility for future expansion. This trial supports Starbucks’ commitment to advancing sustainable packaging solutions, as it works toward its long-term goal of offering consumer packaging that is 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2030.
