Jaipur: Following the death of a five-year-old boy after allegedly taking a dextromethorphan-based cough syrup in Sikar, health minister Gajendra Khimsar Monday ordered an investigation into the safety of the medicine and called for immediate action.
The incident raised concerns as many children, who took the syrup in Sikar and Bharatpur districts, had reportedly shown symptoms similar to those by the dead child, including vomiting, drowsiness, anxiety, dizziness, restlessness and unconsciousness.
The Rajasthan Medical Services Corporation Ltd (RMSCL) later imposed a ban on the particular batch of the syrup. The child, identified as Nityansh Sharma, allegedly took the cough syrup obtained from a govt community health centre (CHC) in Sikar late Sunday night and died Monday morning.
“The boy took the cough syrup from the govt CHC, which he took at night and passed away in the morning,” Harilal Kumawat, a villager who had gone with the family to the district hospital, told TOI.
While the family alleged that the death was caused by the syrup, the health department denied the same. Dr Ashok Maharia, chief medical health officer of Sikar, said, “The family had taken the medicine from a CHC three days ago. The boy was brought dead to SK Hospital Monday.”
