Accessibility compliance status
This website is partially compliant with WCAG 2.2, AA level.
Despite our best efforts to ensure the accessibility of this website, we are aware of some limitations, which we are working to fix. Below is a description of known limitations. Please contact us if you encounter an issue not listed below:
- Colour contrast: low colour contrast on some elements such as graphics, banners, focus indicator
- Keyboard operability: some features not usable with a keyboard, such as some search input fields
- Screen reader support:
- some functionalities not announced correctly by screen readers, such as carousel navigation, active link in page contents, number of results on Search, News, Events, European Experts and What’s new pages, filter labels (descriptions) and comboboxes (dialogue box where users can search for a term or select a term from a list)
- some fields have missing or incorrect descriptions (for example, in search fields)
- some links and buttons lack clear or accessible names such as some close (x) icons in search input fields
- some images lack meaningful alternative (alt) text
- Heading structure: inconsistent heading structure on some pages across the website
- Links opening in a new window: some links open without an advance notification, such as links in our ‘Help us improve our website’ feedback option on the bottom of pages
- Tables: incorrectly structured tables, such as missing links between headers and columns
- Tooltips: tooltips not accessible via keyboard, screen reader or mobile
- Target size: some interactive elements have a small target size, such as footer and grey badges reflecting search queries
- Zoom: when zooming to 400%, some elements such as the carousel overlap with page content
- Documents:
- documents (PDF, Excel, Word) not fully accessible
- links for translated versions of documents are missing the language attribute
- Videos: some videos lack captions or transcripts
- Mobile devices:
- carousel cannot be paused on mobile
- when using the TalkBack screen reader on Android devices, autocomplete suggestions in the search bar only appear if a space is added after typing
