A team of researchers from Southwest University has developed an innovative stretchable sweat-activated yarn battery (S-SAYB) that could revolutionize power sources for wearable electronics. This breakthrough technology addresses a critical limitation in current wearable devices — the inability of conventional rigid batteries to maintain stable power output during physical activity while remaining comfortable against the skin.

The stretchable sweat-activated yarn battery system utilizes two key innovations — elastic fibers coated with a hydrophilic layer to retain sweat electrolytes for continuous ion migration, and tightly wrapped electrodes to maintain electrical connectivity during stretching. These design features allow the battery to deliver consistent power even when stretched to varying degrees.

The batteries’ seamless integration into textiles through standard weaving and knitting processes means they could be incorporated into everyday athletic apparel without altering manufacturing workflows significantly.
